Iowa Children In The Middle

Children in the Middle Iowa

Children in the middle--Mandatory Education

Iowa law requires that parties to any action which involves the issues of child custody or visitation must attend a court-approved course about the affects of divorce on children. In all judicial districts, there are courses such as Children in the Middle or Children Cope with Divorce. These classes designed to help minimize the negative impact of divorce on children and educate parents about the needs of children whose parents are divorcing. A list of divorce education providers is listed below.

Parents are required to attend within forty-five days of the service of original notice or application for modification of an order. A final decree shall not be entered until the parties have complied with this section of the Iowa Code (section 598.19A). Under certain circumstances attendance can be waived by the court.

Each participant must pay a fee. Other persons, such as grandparents may also attend for a fee. The registration procedure for each provider may vary, so participants should call to get specific information when planning to attend a class.

Since their joint roles as parents will continue to exist after the separation, the seminar helps parents begin to restructure their relationship and make appropriate plans for their children. The class has been formatted to instruct parents who are divorcing, unmarried, divorced or separated in the past, or parents that are modifying parenting agreements. Specific issues that are discussed at children in the middle include:

  • Developmental stages of children and how their needs relate to their ability to cope
  • Behavior of children and how to deal with it
  • Community resources
  • Demonstrations showing parental responses that both help and hurt children
  • Pitfalls to avoid
  • How families experience transitions

In addition, the court may require age-appropriate counseling for children who are involved in a dissolution of marriage action.
